We all make mistakes, from the worst of us to the best of us, no one is perfect – especially not out President it seems. Despite somehow becoming a billionaire, Trump has made an unprecedently long list of bad moves over the years, from a few questionable firings on the NBC reality game show, the Apprentice, to his comments on POW’s, downplaying the violence of Charlottesville, and not speaking out about white supremacy. But somehow, he has found a way to TRUMP himself again, with the government shutdown of 2019.
Beginning only 3 days before Christmas, due to a lack of funding in the budget, for his mythical wall, Trump has caused an impasse in fiscal policy, and almost single handedly created a partial government shutdown, where over 420,000 federal employees are being forced to work without even the prospect of a paycheck. Staten Island native Frank Camuso and his wife Christine are totally shocked by this and can’t believe he would take it to such extremes for “the wall”. Frank Camuso was quoted as saying, “When Trump first ran for president and started talking about building a giant wall to basically ‘keep Mexicans out’, no sane person took him seriously, and for him to now hold the country hostage just for this stupid wall is really mind-blowing”. And while Frank Camuso is definitely voicing an opinion most Americans share, Trump himself isn’t planning to build just any ‘stupid wall’. He has asked for over $6 billion in budget considerations for the wall, and according to CNN, he has said that he is ready for the government to be shut down for months or even years to have his way. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has flatly rejected any funding provisions for a wall to be built, just to resolve the stalemate.
And while Trump’s miscues as president have certainly been well documented by everyone from CNN investigators to late-night talk show hosts, nothing he has done until now has directly hurt and hampered so many US citizens. Despite being a business owner, unaffected by the shutdown, Frank Camuso has seen the effects in his native Staten Island. From a close family friend who is a TSA worker being forced into working for free, to his daughter’s Washington DC field trip being canceled due to much of their list of sites to see being shut down. “Tons of people are missing out on the pay they need to take of their family, it isn’t right. My daughter’s class can’t go to the museum in DC because of this, it doesn’t make sense to me at all.” Frank Camuso was quoted as saying.
While these politicians argue and throw stones, they are truly playing with their citizens’ lives. With 80% of all Americans living paycheck to paycheck, if this shutdown lasts too much longer many families will be unable to pay rent or mortgages and will have to simply go without many of their basic needs. The fact is that while Trump takes aim at migrant families, he is hurting the families of the country he was sworn in to protect and no matter what happens in the future, few will be able to forget the awful taste left in their mouths from seeing their loved ones out of work, or without pay, just for a wall that polls reveal a vast majority of the population is vehemently against.
