Growing Up a Yankee Fan
As a family man, and owner of multiple businesses, Staten Island native, Frank Camuso finds it difficult to make time for his many hobbies and pastimes. Despite the daily rigors of being an entrepreneur and owner of multiple well-established businesses Frank Camuso tries his best to spend his weekends with his children and wife, Christine, enjoying all there is to do on Staten Island. Most weekends, if he’s not handling a crisis at one of his restaurants Frank Camuso and his kids can be found playing a game of softball or watching their favorite major league team, the New York Yankees.
Living on Staten Island, they not only have their pick of a number of different baseball fields to choose from for practice but being part of his neighborhood softball league allows Frank Camuso to get his competitive juices flowing and take part in the game he’s loved since being a kid. Growing up a huge fan of the Yankees, Frank Camuso idolized players like Mickey Mantle, Thurmon Munson, Willie Randolph and even more recent stars like Derek Jeter, Tino Martinez, and Aaron Judge. As a kid, he and his friends would spend hours after school playing stickball and pickup softball wherever they could.
Now, over 30 years later, Frank Camuso and the same friends he grew up with, play in their very own softball league and just like back in their youth, together they take on their rivals from neighboring areas of the island. This is just a microcosm of Staten Island as a whole. With so many native Staten Islanders being so deeply rooted in their respective neighborhoods, few if any, ever decide to leave – regardless of howsuccessful, they become or to what heights their careers take them. Staten Island is a borough with deep family ties, a tradition that Frank Camuso and his wife Christine try to pass on to their children every day.
As a Yankee fan living on Staten Island, Frank Camuso and his family have the privilege of getting to see the future generation of Yankee greats in their baseball infancy, every weekend! The Yankees minor league team, the Staten Island Yankees, play their home games only a few minutes away from Frank Camuso at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. While he definitely takes his kids to their fair share of major league games in the Bronx, watching the young minor leaguers takes Frank Camuso back to a simpler time when baseball was much more so about the fun and comradery of your teammates. Having brought his kids up from a young age to respect the game in its purest form, seeing groups of young minor leaguers working their way up to the professional ranks is inspiring and allows them to see the sport at its true nature the way he did growing up. Frank Camuso and his family have rooted for these players now, and like others on Staten Island, they have become enthralled by the dealings of them all, no matter what it is, from trade rumors to the simplest things like a new brand of hot dog within the concession stands. One of the most exciting things is hearing about one of their favorite Staten Island Yankees being ‘called-up’ and getting a chance to play for the major league team. As Frank Camuso put it, it’s like seeing your kid make it to the pros.
